Through the eyes of a grandson - the filmmaker -, "Orange Blossom" tells the story of a woman who, ruled by her integrity and pride, chooses to raise her daughter on her own, in the rural Portuguese countryside of the 1950s.

My dear, I remember as if it were today, the day we met for the first time. I think I was about 15 and still playing with dolls. I looked at you. Full of courage. Whithout letting it show that my whole body was shaking. You grabbed my waist with unusual strength when you pulled me to dance. I felt weak and strong. At that moment I was sure... because I knew I could die in that embrace. Sleep there and just stay in that embrace.

Luca is eight years old and his mother has recently taken her own life. In the traumatic aftermath of his mother's death, he continues to see her. The father tries to explain that the mother is dead and gone forever. For Luca, his mother is real and still alive.

Afonsa, a woman born and raised in rural areas, has always found her livelihood in agriculture. At 84 years old, he faces the harsh reality of his physical fragility, unable to perform the tasks she previously performed with the agility of youth. While she finds herself raped in this painful impasse of old age, Afonsa recal memories of ephemeral times lived in the countryside.
